Nestled in a semi-rural neighborhood, at the base of low rolling juniper hills that stretch into the sage brush flat land of Taos, the home seeks to make a modest statement. The brief for the project was: keep it simple. The clients, with a limited budgeted, wanted a modern structure that was energy efficient, easy to maintain, and that fit into the landscape in an unadorned manner. The house will employ both active and passive solar strategies: using building orientation, shading techniques, along with photo voltaic and solar hot water collectors to achieve minimal to zero energy consumption. 2x8 wall construction allows for a super insulated building envelope. Rain catchment and gray water systems are planned for water conservation in the desert climate. Expected completion date is spring of 2010.
