Donner Ski Cabin
Donner Summit, CA
(Project still under construction)Regeneration, the birth of the next generation and renewal of a place, is the governing design guideline for this Sierra Nevada mountain cabin. The intent of the project is to create a year-round retreat that functions well in the winter months (in a place that can get 20 feet of snow), that is energy efficient, and a center for family gathering. The existing native stone fireplace and steep gable roof provide the architectural language and changes to the building worked within this simple western cabin vernacular. The interior layout of the building has been rearranged to create better circulation paths, public and private spaces, and allows for versatility of activity. Originally, a summer cabin with no insulation and layers of questionable construction the remodel will be super insulated with significant structural upgrades. Locally sourced and salvaged materials are being used throughout, the building will be super insulated, and have a high efficiency heater (amongst other “green” qualities).
Upon completion this project will be an Energy Star and Build It Green rated.
